Using Interpersonal Process Recall for Clinical Skills Review
A structured, relationship-focused approach to reviewing clinical skills that gives supervisees feedback they can actually use.
Course Overview
Live observation and audio/video review of clinical work is required for supervision but without a structured approach, feedback can feel inconsistent, vague, or discouraging. This course introduces Interpersonal Process Recall (IPR) as a replicable method for reviewing clinical skills. IPR centers the therapeutic alliance—the most reliable predictor of successful therapy—and gives supervisors a supportive, non-judgmental framework for guiding supervisees through their own clinical reflection.
Course Description:
Review of clinical skills using live observation or audio/video recording is required for the supervision of mental health counselors. However, many supervisors do not have a standardized method for review. This can cause conflicting feedback or lack of constructive recommendations. This training will cover Interpersonal Process Recall (IPR) as an approach to reviewing clinical skills. IPR focuses on the skills necessary for the key of any successful therapy: the therapeutic alliance.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the two unhelpful approaches to therapy that IPR addresses.
- Utilize about four steps as the "inquirer" in a supervision session using IPR.
- Apply at least three approaches to making the IPR process in supervision non-judgmental and supportive.
This Course Is For You If…
- You review audio or video recordings of clinical work with supervisees but your feedback lacks a consistent, structured approach.
- You want a replicable method for clinical skills review that keeps the focus on what actually makes therapy effective: the therapeutic alliance.
- You're concerned that your current feedback is inconsistent or doesn't give supervisees clear direction for growth.
- You want clinical skills review to feel like a collaborative, supportive process not an evaluative one that puts supervisees on the defensive.
