Use a Formal Ethical Decision Making Process in Supervision
When ethics come up in supervision, winging it isn't an option.
Free ethical decision-making note template included
Course Overview
When a supervisee brings you an ethical concern, what do you do? Winging it isn't just ineffective — it's a liability. Both the ACA and NBCC codes of ethics require supervisors and supervisees to use a formal ethical decision-making process. In this on-demand training, you'll learn why a structured approach matters, compare different ethical decision-making frameworks, and walk away with documentation tools — including a ready-to-use note template.
Course Description:
This training addresses the ethical obligation that both supervisors and supervisees have to use a formal decision-making process when ethical concerns arise. We examine the rationale for formalized ethical decision making as outlined in the ACA (2014) and NBCC (2023) codes of ethics, compare and contrast different ethical decision-making frameworks available in the field, and explore how to document the process clearly and thoroughly. By the end of this training, participants will have a working framework for ethical decision making in supervision and tools to document it effectively.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the importance of and reasons for using a formal ethical decision making process in supervision.
- Compare and contrast different formal ethical decision making processes in supervision.
- Apply documentation to formal ethical decision making processes in supervision.
This Course Is For You If…
- An ethical concern has come up in supervision and you've handled it without a clear, formal process.
- You want to understand what the ACA and NBCC codes actually require of supervisors when ethical issues arise.
- You're looking for a consistent framework you can apply confidently — and model for your supervisees.
- You want documentation tools that reflect sound, defensible ethical practice.
