Suicide in Supervision: When Supervisees and Their Clients Experience Thoughts of Suicide

Are you ready to support your supervisees through one of the hardest challenges they'll face in clinical work?

---COURSE OVERVIEW---

Course Overview

Suicide is rarely covered adequately in mental health training, which means supervisees often step into client situations they're not fully prepared for. And when a client has thoughts of suicide or dies from suicide, supervisees need active, skilled support from their supervisor. This course addresses both sides: how to prepare supervisees to help clients with thoughts of suicide and how to support supervisees through those experiences—including when supervisees themselves are struggling.

Course Description:
The topic of suicide is rarely covered adequately in the training of mental health clinicians. This may mean that supervisees are not adequately prepared when clients acknowledge thoughts of suicide or die from suicide. Similarly how prepared are supervisors to support supervisees in these instances? With one in five people experiencing thoughts of suicide, supervisees are not immune themselves. Are supervisors ready to assist supervisees with thoughts of suicide?

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify about four ways to prepare supervisees to help clients with thoughts of suicide.
  • Apply at least two approaches to supporting supervisees when clients have thoughts of suicide.
  • Utilize around three supervision techniques for assisting supervisees with thoughts of suicide.
---WHO THIS COURSE IS FOR---

This Course Is For You If…

  • You supervise clinicians who work with high-risk clients and want to ensure they're adequately prepared for suicide-related situations before those situations arise.
  • You've had a supervisee whose client attempted or died by suicide—and you want to better support them through those experiences if it happens again.
  • You recognize that supervisees themselves may experience thoughts of suicide, and you want practical guidance for navigating that within a supervisory relationship.
  • You want to feel more confident and prepared when supervision intersects with suicide risk—for clients and supervisees alike.
