From Stuck to Supportive
Rethinking Micromanagement in Supervision

Balancing support, autonomy, and accountability in supervisory relationships

---COURSE OVERVIEW---

Course Overview

Micromanagement in supervision often comes from a good place — but it can erode trust, stifle growth, and damage the supervisory relationship. This on-demand training explores the dynamics behind over-supervision, how supervisee developmental level shapes the support they need, and how to build the kind of supervisory relationship that promotes both accountability and autonomy.

Course Description:
This training helps supervisors recognize when their supervision style has crossed from supportive into controlling — and provides a developmentally informed framework for recalibrating. We explore how supervisee experience level shapes what support looks like, what micromanagement signals in the supervisory relationship, and how to shift toward strategies that build trust and professional growth without losing appropriate oversight.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe about three ways a supervisee's developmental level influences what type and amount of supervision support is most effective.
  • Recall about five signs that a supervision style has shifted toward micromanagement and understand how these patterns affect supervisee confidence and the working alliance.
  • Implement at least two developmentally responsive supervision strategies that balance appropriate structure with the autonomy supervisees need to grow.
---WHO THIS COURSE IS FOR---

This Course Is For You If…

  • You sometimes feel pulled between closely monitoring a supervisee's work and giving them the space to develop — and you're not always sure which is the right call.
  • You supervise newer clinicians and want a clearer framework for adjusting your approach based on their experience level, rather than relying on gut instinct alone.
  • You are a supervisor who wants to build more trust and autonomy into your supervisory relationships while still maintaining the accountability that good supervision requires.

Dana M. Cea (she/they)

PhD, MS, CRC, LCHMC, NCC, QS

Dana understands the pull toward over-supervision — it often comes from care, not control. But she's also seen how it can quietly undermine a supervisee's confidence and limit the supervisory relationship. This training draws on Dana's experience helping supervisors find the right balance: enough structure to keep supervisees safe, enough space to let them grow. If you've ever wondered whether you're hovering too much — or not enough — this training is for you.
