The Inner World of Supervision

Imposter syndrome, countertransference, and using emotional reactions as clinical data

---COURSE OVERVIEW---

Course Overview

Supervision is relational work — and that means emotions show up. This on-demand training explores imposter syndrome in both supervisors and supervisees, along with countertransference in supervision. You will learn how to recognize emotional reactions, normalize them without minimizing risk, and use them as data rather than derailments.

Course Description:
This training explores the emotional interior of supervision — the self-doubt, strong feelings, and relational complexity that supervisors and supervisees carry into the room. We examine imposter syndrome and countertransference not as problems to eliminate, but as information to work with ethically and purposefully. Participants will leave with concrete strategies for naming and navigating emotional processes in supervision while maintaining role clarity, ethical boundaries, and supervisory focus.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify at least two common emotional responses in supervision, including imposter syndrome and countertransference, in both supervisors and supervisees.
  • Differentiate between emotional data and supervisory risk indicators to support reflective rather than reactive supervision.
  • Apply about three supervision strategies that address emotional processes while maintaining ethical boundaries, role clarity, and supervisory focus.
---WHO THIS COURSE IS FOR---

Dana M. Cea (she/they)

PhD, MS, CRC, LCHMC, NCC, QS

As a supervisor, Dana has lived the emotional realities of this work — the self-doubt, the strong feelings that surface, and the challenge of knowing what to do with them. This training is designed for supervisors who want to recognize and use their emotional responses as clinical data rather than something to manage around. Dana brings a reflective, grounding approach that helps supervisors stay present, ethical, and effective even when supervision gets complicated.

"Together, we can make this field better for both clients and clinicians."
