High-Risk Supervision for Today's Clinical Leaders
Responsibility, gatekeeping, and client safety in high-risk contexts
Course Overview
Supervising students and early-career clinicians comes with elevated responsibility and risk. This on-demand training focuses on high-risk supervision contexts — including students, provisionally licensed clinicians, and supervisees navigating significant personal or professional stressors. We explore how to provide support while maintaining gatekeeping responsibilities and protecting client safety.
Course Description:
This training equips clinical supervisors with practical strategies for navigating high-risk supervision contexts. We examine how to identify risk factors, balance support with gatekeeping, and implement documentation and consultation practices that protect both supervisees and clients. Special attention is given to the ethical and emotional weight of holding responsibility in high-stakes situations.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify at least three risk factors that may require elevated supervision oversight in student or provisionally licensed clinician contexts.
- Apply about five supervision strategies that balance support, evaluation, and gatekeeping responsibilities in high-risk clinical contexts.
- Implement about two documentation and consultation practices that protect client safety and support supervisee development in high-risk situations.
This Course Is For You If…
- You supervise students or provisionally licensed clinicians and want clearer guidance on how to identify and respond to elevated risk in the supervisory relationship.
- You feel the tension between supporting a struggling supervisee and fulfilling your gatekeeping responsibilities — and want a more grounded framework for navigating both.
- You are a clinical supervisor, field placement coordinator, or educator who wants stronger risk management and documentation practices in high-stakes supervision contexts.
What You'll Walk Away With
Dana M. Cea (she/they)
As a supervisor, Dana has experienced the weight of high-risk supervision firsthand — the tension between supporting a struggling supervisee and holding firm on gatekeeping, and the challenge of making difficult decisions that affect both client safety and a supervisee's career. This training is designed for supervisors who want a clearer, more structured approach to those hardest moments. Dana brings a grounded, ethically informed perspective that helps supervisors lead with both compassion and accountability.
"Together, we can make this field better for both clients and clinicians."
