Documenting Supervision Sessions and Everything In Between
Go beyond supervision session notes—build a documentation system that protects you, your supervisees, and the clients they serve.
Course Overview
If you're not documenting supervision well, you're exposed—legally, ethically, and professionally. This course covers not just what to document during supervision sessions, but everything that falls in between: supervisee communication, skill evaluations, critical incidents, and more. You'll leave with clear frameworks, a practical template, and the confidence to build a documentation practice that genuinely protects you and your supervisees.
Course Description:
As mental health clinicians, we are rarely taught enough about documentation. This is especially true for supervisors. While each board and licensure type may have unique requirements, there are some core components necessary for any supervision documentation. And documentation extends beyond individual supervision sessions to any discussions, record review, or clinical skills evaluations. What are key sections to supervision documentation? How do you notate supervisees' progress over time? What other than supervision sessions would be important to record?
Learning Objectives:
- Create a supervision note template that meets about five legal and ethical standards
- Utilize at least three techniques to notate progress of supervisees
- Recall around two situations other than supervision sessions for which supervisors should create a record
This Course Is For You If…
- You supervise clinicians and want a clear, comprehensive system for what to document—and when—across every stage of the supervisory relationship.
- You're uncertain what belongs in a supervision session note, and you want practical frameworks you can actually use.
- You're concerned about your liability exposure and want documentation practices that protect both you and your supervisees.
- You want to feel confident and prepared—not scrambling—when documentation matters most.
