Creating Groups with Neurodivergent Adult Clients
Groups can be transformative for neurodivergent clients — or overwhelming. Learn how to facilitate spaces where they can connect, contribute, and show up as themselves.
Course Overview
Groups can be powerful for neurodivergent clients because they offer shared identity, connection, and support. But they can also add pressure. This training covers how to facilitate groups that are genuinely affirming and accessible for neurodivergent adults, and how to take care of yourself in the facilitator role.
Course Description:
Group work can be helpful for a wide variety of client populations. For neurodivergent clients groups can provide a space to give and get support while connecting with others who have a shared identity. However, groups can also be a place that contributes to social anxiety and concerns about "the right way" to show up. As mental health clinicians our role is to help facilitate groups while removing barriers for clients in participating to the extent they want. This training will address group work generally while focusing on groups with neurodivergent adult clients. Neurodivergent affirming and accessible approaches to facilitating various types of groups (e.g., support, process) will be covered. Finally, there will be an exploration of the ways mental health clinicians can take care of themselves as the facilitators of group work.
Learning Objectives:
- Explain at least three aspects of group work that are beneficial for neurodivergent adult clients
- Utilize around five approaches that improve the affirming nature and accessibility of group work for neurodivergent adult clients
- Summarize about four ways mental health clinicians can tend to their own needs while facilitating groups
