Handling the Changing Political Climate and Its Effects on Counselors and Clients
No counselor or client is untouched by political stress. Navigate it ethically, compassionately, and with confidence.
Course Overview
No counselor or client is unaffected by changes in political climates. This course explores the ethical considerations counselors face when politics and practice intersect, including how to hold ethics at the forefront of our work, support marginalized communities experiencing heightened stress, and stay grounded as a professional during times of uncertainty.
Course Description:
No counselor or client is unaffected by changes in political climates. There are times, such as around presidential elections, when stress can be heightened. As counselors we try to support clients navigating this stress while also managing the effects it has on us and our profession. What ethical considerations do we have as counselors when there are major changes in the political landscape? This training will cover how politics and ethics overlap, including how to hold space for political differences in sessions. Focused time will be spent on the effects for marginalized communities. And finally, the training will end with a discussion of how we can come together as colleagues.
Learning Objectives:
- Summarize around three ethical standards related to politics that apply to counselors' professional responsibilities.
- Utilize at least five administrative and clinical approaches that address political stress specific to marginalized communities.
- Analyze about four ways counselors can approach their profession during times of political changes.
This Course Is For You If…
- You've had clients bring their political stress into sessions and want a clearer ethical framework for navigating those conversations.
- You work with marginalized communities and want concrete clinical and administrative strategies for addressing politically driven stress.
- You're feeling the weight of the political climate yourself and want to understand how it affects your role and what you can do about it.
- You care about maintaining professional integrity and ethical grounding when politics and practice intersect.
