When Multicultural Isn't Enough: Cultural Humility in Supervision
Cultural competency is a start — cultural humility is where real growth begins.
Course Overview
Cultural competency is a floor, not a ceiling. Research shows that supervisors who practice cultural humility build stronger supervisory working alliances — and that leads to better outcomes for supervisees and the clients they serve. This on-demand training explores the meaningful difference between cultural competencies and cultural humility, introduces concrete activities for bringing cultural humility into your supervision sessions, and gives you tools to assess your own cultural humility and support your supervisees in doing the same.
Course Description:
This training draws on research connecting supervisor cultural humility to positive supervisory alliance and outcomes (Zhang et al., 2021) and frameworks from the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (Ratts et al., 2015) and Watkins et al. (2019). We examine what distinguishes cultural humility from cultural competency, explore practical activities for incorporating cultural humility into supervision, and look at how supervisors can assess their own cultural humility and create space for supervisees to do the same. By the end of this training, participants will have a working understanding of cultural humility as a supervisory practice and concrete tools to apply it.
Learning Objectives:
- Compare and contrast cultural competencies with cultural humility.
- Incorporate cultural humility into supervision with activities.
- Assess own cultural humility, as well as the cultural humility of supervisees.
This Course Is For You If…
- You've completed multicultural training but sense there's more to the work than checking competency boxes.
- You want to understand what cultural humility actually looks like in day-to-day supervision practice.
- You're looking for practical activities to bring cultural humility into your supervisory relationship.
- You want tools to grow your own cultural humility — and invite that same reflection in your supervisees.
