Applying Positive Psychology to Preventing Suicide in the Trans and Non Binary Community

Build a protective-factor toolkit grounded in resilience and strengths-based care, not just risk assessment.

---COURSE OVERVIEW---

Course Overview

Suicide prevention work often centers on risk and deficit. This course flips the lens: applying positive psychology principles (strengths, meaning, connection, and protective factors) to suicide prevention specifically within the trans and non binary community. Walk away with a strengths-based framework you can use alongside (not instead of) standard risk assessment.

Course Description:
Trans and non binary individuals, while at high risk for suicide, show immense resilience. The resilience comes from five key protective factor themes: individual difference factors, gender identity related factors, social support, reasons for living, and gender euphoria related factors. This training maps these five themes onto the five themes of the PERMA(TM) Theory of Well-Being. Further, positive psychology interventions that relate to each area are shared. More specifically clinicians will learn how to adapt positive psychology interventions for trans and non binary clients.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recall the five key protective factors themes for trans and non binary individuals and the five themes of PERMA(TM)
  • Recall positive psychology interventions that promote protective factors for trans and non binary clients
  • Apply positive psychology interventions that meet the needs of trans and non binary clients

Dana M. Cea (she/they)

PhD, MS, CRC, LCMHC, NCC, QS

Dana has spent years working at the intersection of strengths-based practice and crisis intervention. This course grew out of a frustration with prevention frameworks that treat trans and non binary clients only as a risk category, rather than as whole people with real protective factors worth building on.

"Together, we can make this field better for both clients and clinicians."
