Mixed Neurotype Partners: Tips, Tricks, and Techniques for Counseling
Mixed neurotype couples have real strengths and real friction points. Get the affirming frameworks and practical tools to support them in session.
Course Overview
Mixed neurotype couples have specific needs around communication, emotional intimacy, and physical intimacy that standard couples counseling approaches often miss. This training covers what those needs are, how to counsel mixed neurotype partners in an affirming way, and how to give clients practical psychoeducation they can actually use.
Course Description:
Many neurodivergent (e.g., ADHD, autistic) individuals want and have intimate relationships. Often these relationships are made up of mixed neurotype partners, which could be partners of different neurodivergent types (e.g., one ADHD partner and one autistic partner) or partners who are and are not neurodivergent (e.g., one autistic partner and one neurotypical partner). Mixed neurotype partners have specific needs related to the different areas of intimate relationships, such as communication, emotional intimacy, and physical intimacy. This training will cover common needs for mixed neurotype partners, ways to be an affirming counselor with mixed neurotype partners, and how to provide clients with psychoeducation and concrete steps they can try in their relationships.
Learning Objectives:
- Demonstrate unique needs (e.g., communication) of intimate relationships with mixed neurotype partners
- Explain affirming approaches to counseling mixed neurotype partners
- Provide information learned regarding mixed neurotype partners to counseling clients
This Course Is For You If…
- You work with couples or individuals in relationships and have noticed that mixed neurotype dynamics create unique challenges standard approaches don't quite address
- You want to better understand what communication, emotional intimacy, and physical intimacy look like for mixed neurotype partners and how to support those needs
- You're looking for affirming counseling frameworks that don't pathologize neurodivergent ways of relating
- You want concrete psychoeducation and strategies you can actually share with clients in session
