Course Description:
The trans and non binary (TNB) community has vastly higher rates of suicide risk when compared to the general population in the United States of America. The high rates of suicide risk are due to the increased number of risk factors specific to the TNB community. As the research grows, the conversation is shifting from focusing on risk factors to protective factors. The TNB community has numerous protective factors that can be used to build the resilience of TNB individuals and thus prevent possible suicide attempts. Anyone, as a professional or community member, can become a protective factor for TNB individuals. Risk factors, protective factors, and ways to successfully serve as a protective factor will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Name the reasons that trans and non binary individuals seek mental health services
  • Recall statistics surrounding suicide for trans and non binary individuals and identify risk factors that affect these statistics
  • Interpret protective factors for trans and non binary individuals regarding suicide
  • Translate the implications that risk factors and protective factors have for trans and non binary individuals to services provided

Dana M. Cea (she/they)

PhD, MS, CRC, LCHMC, NCC, QS

Dana has spent years researching and applying crisis intervention work with trans and non binary clients. She has noticed too many well-meaning trainings reduce people to risk percentages. This course is Dana's attempt to give clinicians a fuller, more affirming, and more clinically useful conversation to bring into the room.

"Together, we can make this field better for both clients and clinicians."
